The Runcible Quintet

Neil Metcalfe - flute
Adrian Northover - soprano sax
Daniel Thompson - acoustic guitar
John Edwards - double bass
Marcello Magliocchi - drums

The Runcible Quintet is the result of a collaboration between 5 musicians, all of whom are committed to pursuing and exploring the possibilities of creative improvisation.
Neil Metcalfe (flute), Adrian Northover (saxophone), Daniel Thompson (guitar) and
John Edwards (bass) are all active on the London and international improvisation scene.
In 2016 they met and played some gigs with the Italian percussion maestro
Marcello Magliocchi.
A studio session was arranged, which resulted in a CD, ‘Five’ (reviews).
In 2018 ‘Four’ was released, from live sessions of a quartet (sans Mr Edwards)
and a quintet gig.

The groups works;
both inside and outside of the tradition established by the founders of SME and Company. The flute and soprano sax often move in similar ways, notes carefully bent together and around one another. When the quintet finally hit their stride, the energy erupts in spurts which are focused and intense and then calming down to a more hypnotic dream-like state.’ - Bruce Lee Gallanter, DMGS

‘Five is yet another demonstration of how Free Music continually renews itself, as the highly accomplished if not famous continue to play it.’ —Ken Waxman , http://www.jazzword.com/

Between them these musicians have performed with a multitude of artists, such as:
Evan Parker, Roscoe Mitchell, Paul Dunmall, Billy Bang, Lol Coxhill, The London Improvisers Orchestra,Mal Waldron, Peter Kowald, Steve Potts, Joelle Leandre, John Tchicai, Beniat Achiary, Carlos Zingaro, Tristan Honsinger, Steve Beresford etc.

'They dined on mince, and slices of quince,
Which they ate with a runcible spoon;
And hand in hand, on the edge of the sand,
They danced by the light of the moon.'

from The Owl and the Pussycat (1871) by Edward Lear
